Turning climate innovation into viable, scalable solutions requires more than technological breakthroughs, with financing, policy frameworks and institutional capacity also shaping what reaches the market. Against this backdrop, the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has launched a Climate Innovation Hub to advance climate action alongside Africa’s development priorities.

Launched on 17 September in Accra, Ghana, the Hub is designed to connect entrepreneurs, policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, researchers, corporates and civil society in developing solutions to the continent’s climate and development challenges. Its approach extends beyond technology to address the commercial, financial, regulatory and institutional barriers that can prevent promising ideas from progressing beyond the development stage. Access to appropriate financing, supportive policies, viable business models, digital systems and improved operational practices will form part of this broader innovation framework.

These factors are particularly significant for African economies seeking to advance climate action while pursuing industrialisation, infrastructure development, economic transformation and job creation. Through the Hub, ACEP aims to help innovators identify problems, develop or adapt solutions and address the risks that can constrain adoption and commercial viability. Strengthening connections between innovators and the wider ecosystem needed to deploy their solutions will be central to moving concepts towards practical implementation.

The launch also introduced the Hub’s inaugural cohort of six young innovators working across diverse fields. ACEP will support the cohort in testing and refining their solutions, with the aim of creating pathways from prototype development to deployment and wider impact. The initiative reflects ACEP’s focus on building the enabling conditions for climate innovation to thrive, with an emphasis on developing solutions that can secure the support, adoption and investment needed to scale. By addressing barriers beyond the technical dimensions of innovation, the Hub seeks to strengthen the link between climate solutions and Africa’s broader development objectives.
