The serene agricultural landscapes of St. Vincent and the Grenadines are facing an unexpected and relentless foe. Authorities across the island nation are rapidly escalating containment efforts to eradicate the Giant African Snail, a notoriously destructive invasive pest that poses a critical danger to local crops and farmers’ livelihoods.

To halt the pest’s advance, agriculture officials have deployed a multi-pronged response. Current containment strategies centre on aggressive field surveillance, manual collection, and targeted biosecurity measures designed to ensure the snail cannot establish a foothold in pristine farming zones.

“The Ministry is working diligently to contain the snail strictly within the affected areas as part of our broader strategy to limit its spread,” explained Dr. Raffique Bailey, Head of Research and Development within the Ministry of Agriculture, during a recent interview with the Agency for Public Information.

Because human activity remains one of the fastest ways for pests to jump boundaries, officials are calling on the public to act as a first line of defense. Preventing cross-contamination between zones has become a vital priority for the island’s biosecurity team.

“We strongly encourage anyone moving in and out of infected areas to take all necessary precautions,” Dr. Bailey emphasized, urging residents and travelers to inspect gear, vehicles, and produce to stop the invader in its tracks.
