Nigeria’s Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has outlined an ambitious plan to revolutionize the country’s livestock and meat sector through commercial pasture production.

Speaking in Kaduna State’s Chikun Local Government Area, Maiha emphasized the significant potential of Nigeria’s livestock industry, with its vast herds of cattle, goats, and sheep. However, he acknowledged the need for a more systematic approach to unlock this potential.

“The global livestock industry is increasingly adopting commercial pasture production,” Maiha said. “This model allows for greater efficiency, sustainability, and scalability.”

To address the challenges facing Nigeria’s dairy industry, the minister outlined plans for genetic improvement programs and infrastructure upgrades to boost milk production. The government also intends to establish grazing reserves equipped with modern facilities to attract herders and improve livestock management.

Nigeria’s livestock sector plays a vital role in the country’s economy, contributing significantly to GDP and food security. However, the sector faces various challenges, including climate change, water scarcity, and disease outbreaks. By embracing commercial pasture production and implementing innovative solutions, Nigeria aims to overcome these challenges and position itself as a major player in the global livestock market.
