Ghana’s Gold Rush vs. ‘Green Pharmacy’: The Economic and Ecological Cost of Galamsey

Ghana’s burgeoning gold mining sector particularly the illegal small-scale mining known as galamsey, presents a complex trade-off between short-term economic gain and long-term ecological and health security. While the sector is a significant economic driver, directly employing over a million small-scale miners and contributing 35% of the nation’s gold production, its unchecked expansion is raising alarm over an impending ecological catastrophe and a crisis in primary healthcare. With global gold prices soaring, boosting Ghana’s reserves and economic indicators, critics argue the government is sacrificing environmental sustainability for immediate financial benefits, a stance that is politically contentious, as seen in the recent return of President John Mahama to power amidst criticism of his predecessor’s inaction.

The most devastating, yet least-recognized, impact of galamsey is the rapid destruction of Ghana’s natural ‘pharmacy’. An estimated 70% of Ghanaians rely on traditional herbal medicines for their healthcare, a reliance particularly acute among those who cannot afford modern medical facilities. Illegal mining operations have caused one of the world’s highest rates of deforestation in Ghana, which lost around 25% of its tree cover between 2001 and 2004 and is currently losing 135,000 hectares annually. This loss directly translates to the extinction of essential medicinal plant species, such as the Kwaebesin, a crucial plant for bone fracture treatment, once abundant but now requiring sourcing from over 600 kilometers away due to habitat destruction. As botanists warn, the removal of topsoil and alteration of microclimates by mining is leading to the permanent loss of original vegetation, potentially extinguishing undiscovered treatments.

The scarcity driven by environmental degradation is fundamentally disrupting the supply chain for traditional healers and institutional producers alike, leading to a dramatic increase in healthcare costs. Traditional healer Farida Mohammed, for instance, must now purchase scarce Kwaebesin for GHS2,000 a sack, leading to a treatment cost of approximately GHS200 for her patients—a service that was once provided for free. This increased cost diminishes the viability of traditional medicine as a low-cost alternative for citizens who cannot afford the $1,823 demanded by private hospitals for serious treatments. Ghana’s Centre for Plant Medicine Research also reports rising costs and difficulty in sourcing once-common plants like ageratum conyzoides and desmodium adscendens due to galamsey-related scarcity, underscoring the systemic nature of the supply shock.

Further compounding the crisis is the regulatory gap and public health risk posed by the contamination of the remaining medicinal supply. Illegal mining sites use heavy metals such as mercury, cyanide, and arsenic to process gold, which seeps into the soil and is subsequently bioaccumulated in the medicinal plants harvested nearby. Studies have already detected elevated levels of these heavy metals in medicinal plants from mining areas, posing a severe, long-term health threat—including neurological disorders and congenital defects—to those who ingest them. While the Food and Drugs Authority tests finished herbal medication, the raw plant materials sold in open markets are largely unregulated, exposing consumers, including urban traders and healers, to the risk of poisoning from a supply chain they can no longer vouch for. Despite this growing health and ecological threat, the Environmental Protection Authority acknowledged that medicinal plant losses were not specifically on its radar, although it confirmed the permanent extinction of original ecosystems in most artisanal mining zones, signaling a critical need for immediate regulatory and conservation intervention.
